The original settlement of Arbanassi is situated four kilometers from the town of Veliko Turnovo /the Medieval Bulgarian capital/ on a high plateau, having a splendid view over the castles of Trapezitsa and Tzarevets. Arbanassi boasts impressive houses and churches with rich interior decoration, wood-carving, and mural paintings created in XVI - XVII century.

These unique
monuments from Bulgarian architectural and
arts heritage in Arbanassi have not only aroused
the interest of tourists who frequently visit
but also of scientists, archeologists, historians,
architects, and artists. In 2000 it was declared
a "historical site" with national significance.
In the 17-18th centuries the village reached
its "Golden age". It happened in the 16th
century when Arbanassi became a possession
of the Turk Superior Ruler (Vizir) Rustem
Pasha, who ensured tax concessions of the
population against the duty to guard the near
gorge. These conditions brought a significant
upsurge of the settlement during the following
17th and 18th century. Trade with Italy, Austro-Hungary,
Russia and India, as well as the crafts, such
as goldsmith's, coppersmith's, blacksmith's
etc. flourished. Richly ornamented monumental
houses and churches were built during this
period. The Arbanassi houses have no equivalent
in building and style in any other part of
the country. They impress with their austere
external architecture with solid stone walls
and heavy gates that contrast the coziness
and comfort of the interior. The ceilings,
doors, cupboards, fireplaces, windows and
walls are beautifully decorated with carvings,
paintings and plaster elements.
The village of Arbanassi is included in the UNESCO's world heritage list of valuable cultural sites.
