Melnik

Melnik is the smallest and one of the most fascinating towns in Bulgaria. It is a blend of unique houses clustered among cliffs on the hills, fascinating history, culture and very fine locally produced wine. Thracians, Romans and Byzantines, Slavs and Bulgarians have writen the town's history.

The silent white houses, built closely together with beautiful bay-windows and peaceful yards with lush vegetation fill visitors with a feeling of serenity and admiration.

Melnik is situated among the whimsical sand pyramids - the most fascinating natural phenomena of the entire Balkans. As a result of the erosive effect of wind, water, sun and snow, remarkable natural sculptures with strange forms (mushrooms, minarets, swords, "Egyptian " pyramids etc.) are formed. The Sand Pyramids of Melnik are proclaimed a Natural landmark of Bulgaria.

Melnik is not only made up of history, architecture and natural scenery, it is also an area producing delicious local wines. Original cellars, hewn up in the sand pyramids, surrounding the town from all sides, keep the famous Melnik wine till it ripens, matures, naturally preserving it. Nowhere else can one find this combination of natural and man-made technology working together. Neighboring Turkey as well as far away France and Spain have developed a serious taste for this delicious, dark-red, full-bodied wine.
