| Rhodope mountains

The Rhodope mountains are the most lyrical and among the oldestof Bulgaria's mountains. - the land where panpipes, Orpheus and his Cult originated. It is a region rich in gems and ores, natural oval stone formations and gently rounded forested peaks, picturesque villages and friendly and hospitable people. 15 nature reserves have been established here, some of these are included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Of particular
interest are the Karst areas with their deep
river gorges, large caves and intriguing sculptured
rock formations. For thousands of years people
here have been living in harmony with nature,
preserving in the mountains valleys wild and
untouched corners of beauty combined with
an unbelievable variety of plants and wildlife.
Frequently you will catch a glimpse of a running
doe or the fluffy tail of a squirrel and the
long ears of a rabbit. Passing through the
Rhodopes you will come across numerous herds
of sheep and cows returning from pasture.
In October 2004, a large diamond deposit was discovered in the Rhodope mountains. According to experts this is the only diamond deposit to be found anywhere on the Balkan Peninsula.
